What The Hell Made Me Think I Could Do A Triathlon (Part
What the hell made me think I could do a triathlon? (Part 1) Iâm pretty sure I shocked and surprised many Facebook friends and family when I shared my friendâs picture of us from the Marshman sprint triathlon last weekend. (Sheâs the one who looks like a triathlete.) When she asked me the day before why I wanted to do this*, I said, âItâs a new way to challenge myself. I donât really want to compete against other people; I just want to see what I can do. I never fancied myself a triathlete before.â Perhaps, I thought, there was a triathlete inside me. Something inside me was really excited to do this, even though I didnât think I had prepared or trained enough. I didnât even commit to doing it until the day before. I had a lot of reasons to NOT do it. I had been thinking a lot about it, in spite of these reasons NOT to do it. I trained anyway and had my husband reserve off of work for that Saturday, so that I could go to the 1st-timer orientation and do the swim clinic, and for the event on Sunday. Last week I asked my husband if he did, indeed, have off work. He shook his head no, and I said, âOh, well.â Then, he asked why. He remembered that the triathlon was why I was asking. Suddenly, he who would usually put work as top priority during this financial âcatch upâ time and resist any extraneous expenses, especially after learning that he had to replace his work truck by the end of the month, was trying to help me make it happen. âBut, Iâd have to take my bikes in and see if they can get them race-ready. I may even need a new bike.â âYou deserve a new bike,â he said. I almost cried. He wanted this for me. Then, I started to think about reasons I should believe I can do it: So, I got a new bike. I tested it, and it actually didnât seem to perform as well as my old bike, but I was now pulling the trailer up hills. That night I called my friend, who I had not committed to, and told her that I was IN. She said, âWait. Back up. Before you go any further, I had actually decided this week NOT do it.â She told me about all of these âsigns.â In spite of a foot infection, she had gone with some other participants to test out the bike course (12.5 miles) and thought it was crazy hard. She was most afraid of the swim portion (.25 miles.) However, when I told her I was in, she was back in. Though, because we were both very uncertain about the swim, we decided that we would do the swim clinic, where we had the opportunity to swim in the very same COLD lake water. (It was 70 degrees on race day.) After the clinic, with the encouragement of the staff who insisted that even the experienced triathletes will be less trained for the swim, and with the reassurance that lifeguards and buoys would be available if we needed rest, we committed. And, we agreed that no negative influences or thoughts were going to enter our heads from that point forward. We were totally focused on mentally practicing the optimal performance, the knowledge that we are very powerful, strong women with a lot of resolve, and the exhilaration of crossing the finish line able to proclaim, âWe are triathletes!â We also made the agreement to stick together, for better or worse. From the picture above, you know that we got that moment. We did it, but it was a challenge, mentally and physically. I had issues shifting gears, and âweâ did not perform well comparative to the other athletes. In a way, I feel like I never really did anticipate a strong performance, and I wonder, even in spite of bike issues, if I could have resolved earlier on to keep going, even if I had to stay in a higher gear, we both would have done so much better. I wonder in general â" if I had higher expectations, would we have finished sooner? Perhaps I/we will find out next year. In the meantime, my experience reinforced for me that I need look no further than deep down inside me to know if I can do something or not. More importantly, I feel like I can better reinforce for my daughters a few very important life lessons that I hope inspire them to challenge themselves to reach their greatest potential: (P.S. â" Bonus pic! Hereâs me singing with the above singer/songwriter, Jeffrey Gaines â" another highlight of my life.)

The main aim should be to create marketing strategies that can help you capture a large audience and then choose clients you can work with. Multiple offers sounds better since you will always have other clients to fall back on if a deal falls through. Here are some marketing tips that can help you attract more clients: Create content that has value As a real estate agent your main aim should be to focus on your clients and specifically their needs. This includes the time between transactions. Just posting one property after another and sending them emails will not help. You need to share valuable content that they can use to buy or sell their properties in the market. Click To Tweet The content they receive should also be shareable to increase your exposure among potential clients. This way your business and service will remain at the top of their mind whenever they decide to invest. Harness the power of social media Chances are most of your clientele is on social media and use it to search for listings. As a real estate agent or broker, you can also take advantage of it by meeting them on those platforms. However, that does not mean that you should start posting listings there. These donât provide market value as such for anyone who isnât in the market for a property. However, you can share market information that they can use to capitalize on investment opportunities or share personal insights they can use and how they can use them. Write an eBook This is a unique multi-channel marketing medium that can be downloaded easily and require little to no investment from consumers. As an experienced agent, you can offer your expertise on a number of topics and create books out of them that you can sell online. As a professional real estate agent you need to remain in touch with past clients regularly so that your services remain top of mind. You can keep in touch with them by sending them email newsletters with valuable information. That way they will be more likely to remember when they need your help again. Another way you can do this for free is to give them a call to thank them for their business. Sending a small holiday or birthday card that isnât related to the sale will also work wonders. Consider professional photo staging Staging and professional photos are crucial in this business since the first impression usually counts with buyers. So if you want to attract attention, have good pictures taken of the interior and exterior. However, before that, remove the clutter and have the home professionally staged to make a good first impression. A home that does not look lived in and is picture perfect at the same time will attract more buyers to showings. This will increase your chances of a profitable and fast sale. Fired for a SoliloquyThe Case of Office Hamlets
Terminated for a Soliloquyâ"The Case of Office Hamlets As the lift entryway closes, however before it starts its plummet, the chief or HR director on the opposite side of the entryway hears a worker hastily mumble what he thought was a totally private idea, x!@!!*!# boss!#!*@!!x! work!, after quickly ascertaining that it was sheltered to do that, since nobody (should be) inside earshot. Should the chief or supervisor do anything with that data? In front of an audience Muttering before an Unseen Audience The speculative circumstance depicted is fairly similar to that portrayed by NG (truncated here to forestall exacerbating his expert hopelessness by distinguishing him by his genuine name-handle) in a discussion at City-Data.com, a tremendous Illinois-based long range interpersonal communication and data site for U.S. urban communities, with heaps of work related postings (absolute postings: more than 11,000,000): Indeed, I worked at a call place for ATT (Sales and Services). On the eleventh of this current month I was managing an incensed client. After the client hung up, I said (exclamation erased) you! Earlier today, my chief assembled me in for a conference. She disclosed to me that corporate had heard my call. Clearly they can in any case hear after the call has finished and heard my comment. I had extremely incredible deals, consistently followed my call stream, my discussion time consistently met objective, and my QA scores were continually passing. My chief revealed to me she attempted to converse with corporate to spare me yet they didnt move and advised her to end me. That sort of murmur drain can obviously push a representative into difficulty and perhaps, as for this situation, booted out the entryway. I said to some degree like above, on the grounds that the call place operator was at work at the hour of the occurrence, instead of in some remote leisure time area. In any case, shouldn't something be said about cases in which being caught is neither expected, nor in the work environment itself (e.g., in another place of business' lift or the men's room on another floor), nor a hazard inborn in the organization's observing approaches or innovation (e.g., calls that keep on being recorded for quality affirmation considerably after the telephone segment of the call closes)? Ended NG (which isn't another way to say Nothing but bad) made the deadly slip of organizing an unrefined talk while at work, without understanding that regardless of whether all the world's a phase isn't accurate, the workplace is surely oneâ"and like most stages, one with a group of people, saw or not. State Something, See Something (Happen) Alright, so he got captured. Should his ears-like-a-hound manager treat it as no big deal, or as fire that will cut off NG's ties behind, under and in front of him? Putting aside the lawful issue of whether a representative could possibly be terminated for murmuring something (other than dangers) nobody yet the individual answerable for terminating him hears, there stay two different issues significant enough in their own entitlement to warrant investigating them: the vital and good inquiries related with terminating a venting office-soliloquizing Hamlet caught while at the working environment. caught while somewhere else (on harsh relationship with being caught in the act on off-site (red)Facebook) However, before investigating the rights and wrongs of such Hamlet firings, it is shrewd to know about the smarts: A keen call community operator will understand that for up to 10 or 15 seconds after the client has hung up, the account programming and call setup, e.g., ring and tone VOIP, can keep recording. This was affirmed by the operator in a call to my bank and is in any case a typical event. Along these lines, worker be careful! (Managerâ"appreciate the observation reward!) In like manner, a customer or client reaction after a specialist detach might be recorded for a couple of moments, along these lines giving data about whether or why the operator call disengage was uneven. Trivial Waterâ"or Fatal Fireâ"under the Bridge? All in all, in what capacity should the chief or HR supervisor react, if by any means? For a second, think about the potential outcomes from the vital and good perspective (as opposed to from the lawful point of view). The conceivable key and good reactions as options in contrast to terminating incorporate Try not to respond: No mischief done, you state, on the grounds that the client had just disengaged, truly, if not inwardly. Also, in spite of the fact that the inquiry regarding what the law in truth permits is saved for the occasion, to the degree that the law might be obscure, adaptable, variable (e.g., contingent upon the locale) with unanticipated ramifications for the organization, that vulnerability can provide enough opportunity to stop and think to legitimize not responding. Against this smooth non-reaction and notwithstanding whatever legitimate fluffiness there might be in terminating the operator, it very well may be contended that the potential for calamity on this and future events was and is inadmissibly tremendous. Assume the client had only dropped the telephone and afterward got it to continue tuning in, making the bogus impression of a call detach. On the off chance that that didnt occur during the ongoing call, the damage done is that a possibly heartbreaking propensity would be strengthened by an administrative or screen's non-response. Check the representative's record for any notice of Tourette's condition: This may seem like a joke, yet the fact of the matter is that it might be beneficial to look for uncontrollable issues at hand, for example, intense pressureâ"particularly if the worker being referred to is in any case an important organization resource. This bodes well from the money related key point of view, for clear reasons, for example, cost-sparing staff maintenance and evasion of conceivable claims (regardless of whether silly). Likewise, if private mutterings will be adequate for the terminating of that worker, a point of reference will have been built up for terminating, rather than restoring, denouncing or in any case holding the following off the mark office Hamletâ"which can lead to (more) instances of In the event that it ain't broke, don't burn it. Another posting on the city-information site guaranteed that a manager who terminated a client support rep for reviling softly within the sight of a client additionally boasted about what an extraordinary representative the rep was before that occurrence. Be that as it may, the money saving advantage picture here varies from that of the conceivably corrigible office Hamlet who does no quick mischief, since there was a most likely antagonistically influenced outsider, the client, present at the hour of this different multi-individual occurrence. Timetable affectability preparing for staff: To amplify the probability that the culpable Hamlet would get the rehabilitative message without being singled out (which can have harming results of its own), mastermind an affectability instructional course, or, all the more essentially, simply have a short gathering about the issue, to nip it in the (as of now in part bloomed) bud. The point can be pounded home by clarifying that the gathering was called on account of such an episode and, that the guilty party has been recognized (without uncovering what it's identity isâ"which will, regardless, be superfluous, since the tattle plant will in the blink of an eye fill in that clear). Tell the association, if there is one: At the danger of ending up entangled in a discussion or claim about worker free-discourse rights, you could raise the issue with the representative association rep, if there is one. That could conceivably have some impact. Survey the tape to evaluate and improve specialist client strategies and relations: Sitting down with Hamlet and inspecting the communication with the client could demonstrate priceless in a few different ways: 1. It reestablishes a community oriented tone to the working relationship, as a balance to whatever feeling of estrangement that may have been a factor in his upheaval. 2. It offers an important information digging open door to dissect and improving the organizations, conventions, systems, and so on., of specialist client (scripted) collaborations. 3. It permits the specialist to rescue his confidence and add positives to the negative understanding. 4. It is probably going to induce appreciation in the specialist that can convert into better execution. 5. Whenever proposed in a non-compromising, possibly even light-contact way, it could make the specialist OK with utilizing the tape as a gathering exerciseâ"this, be that as it may, being the most improbable result. Concentrate on the worker's aims, not on the results of his conduct: In morals, a major object is made about the qualification between the good (de)merits of goals versus the good (de)merits of results of one's activities. Since we are surely more legitimately answerable for our goals than for the outcomes of our activities, it appears to be sensible to contend that the workplace Hamlet ought to be ethically decided by what he proposed than by the unintended consequence(s). Similarly significantly, if, then again, it is demanded that results tally more than aims, the workplace Hamlet should even now not be terminated, on the grounds that there were no critical outcomes, put something aside for the previously mentioned danger of fortifying his monolog propensities by neglecting to respond in any capacity at allâ"which, as appeared above, is just one of the numerous accessible key and good administration reactions. From this ethical viewpoint, there is just a single appropriate reaction to an office Hamlet who has done no damage and who, in an idea to-be singular second, mumbles !@x!*!%x! or on the other hand asks, To be, or not to be? Leave him alone⦠. ⦠But cause him to learn.

Inability to Involve ALL Stakeholders Regularly, top-positioning chiefs expect the job of the main envoys and transports of choices during a change execution. This disregards the bleeding edge directors. The correspondence channel ought to be intended to guarantee that any change correspondence includes every single partner, including the center directors. College Admissions Officers Use Social Networks to Conduct Background Checks - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
College Admissions Officers Use Social Networks to Conduct Background Checks - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Yesterday, I blogged about how corporate recruiters are using social networks to conduct background checks. Today, I want to talk about how the same is true for high school students looking to enroll in colleges. When it comes to personal and professional development both of these posts are extremely important and mark periods in your life, when a single decision or opportunity can make you or break you. There is a high-school graduating class nationwide of 3.3 million students. Colleges are expected to be sifting through a record number of applications this year. Personal branding is important for this crowd as well, especially for those wanting to gain acceptance from ivy league schools, such as Harvard University. If you dont stand out or make the grade, you might have to settle and no one wants to do that. This is especially hard with parents that really put the pressure on. Today, Im going to go over some brand new research on how high school students should be mindful of what they put on social networks, then give you a quick analysis and a few tips. The research Kaplan survey (Top 500 colleges) Conclusion: Despite the sheer amount of applications colleges get, social networks are so accessible that they turn to them and uncover positive or negative information about applicants in an instant. 10% of admissions officers acknowledged looking at social-networking sites to evaluate applicants 38% said that what they saw negatively affected their views of the applicant 25% of schools checking social networks said their views were improved 21% of colleges used social-networking sites for recruiting prospects and gathering information about applicants. Monster survey (3,400 college-bound students) Conclusion: High school students are much more disciplined today than they were years ago. They recognize the competition to not only get into college, but what they will face when they graduate, so they are preparing early. The economy isnt helping. ?? 86% plan to work this summer 66% intend to work while in school (86% part-time) 40% will begin their search before arriving on campus! 87% anticipate having at least one internship during their college career The admissions officers speak The school will do an Internet search, including Facebook and other sites, if an application raises red flags, such as a suspension from school. Thomas Griffin, director of undergraduate admissions at North Carolina State University in Raleigh The school hasnt rejected any applicant because of information posted on the Internet. Princeton doesnt have time to look at all applicants online information, but if an offensive Facebook post came to the colleges attention, the school would examine it. Janet Lavin Rapelye, dean of admission at Princeton University My staff is free to check out anonymous tips about social-networking sites or make use of the information if the admissions committee is evaluating a tight decision. Greg Roberts, senior associate dean of admission at the University of Virginia âMy feeling is that only in rare exceptions would we go and look at Facebook or MySpace because we have so much information to look at already when reviewing applications.â Jacqueline Murphy, St. Michaelâs College Admissions Director The students speak There are some things I might think about getting rid of. Nicholas Santangelo, a senior at Seton Hall Prep âI donât do anything that bad, and if I did, I wouldnât put it on the Internet.â Jonathan Kahn, a 17-year-old âI think that itâs definitely something that a lot of kids worry about â" even for things like summer internships.â Tess Russell, a 21-year-old junior at Middlebury College. My thoughts First off, how hard is it to Google someones name? What about search for their name on a social network? The accessibility and ease of search makes it obvious for admissions officers to use social networks as a background check for applicants. If you read between the lines and really think about this, Id say that they are using it more for applicants that are on the line with being accepted or rejected or ones that are in the good pile. Why might you ask? Well, they dont want to take a chance that some student gets accepted and misrepresents their (corporate) brand. Remember, when a company or school accepts you, they endorse your brand, meaning that you represent their corporate brand as an ambassador. When it comes to students on the line, its obvious that a social network may help some cross the line into the acceptance bin and others getting tossed in the trash. Personal branding tips Take a good look at your online presence and then a great big look at the college you are gunning for. If you find anything inappropriate, I want you to ask yourself do I want to risk acceptance to the school of my dreams? Find a teacher you can trust and show them your Facebook page. Ask them to examine it and give you feedback. Locate your school adviser and get guidance on what to include on your social networking page. Try and take an internship in high school, as it will help differentiate you substantially when applying to schools and its great experience (I did one).

Careers Christmas playlist University of Manchester Careers Blog
Careers Christmas playlist University of Manchester Careers Blog Iâll be driving home for Christmas next week (well my brother in law will be) and as we head back up the A1 we are sure to be blasting out the Christmas tunes! Itâs become a bit of a Christmas tradition as has my annual Christmas themed blog. This year I thought I would combine the two and create my own Christmas themed careers playlist Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer Santa appreciated Rudolfâs red nose, in fact he couldnât have done his job without it. In the same way employers are looking for people who stand out from the crowd but unlike the song employers arenât going to approach you (out of the fog) instead the onus you to demonstrate that you the right candidate for the job. To do this youâll need to tailor each CV or application you write, making sure that you highlight all the skills and experiences listed on the job descriptions. Itâs unlikely that many employers will want you to have a red nose unless the jobs in the North Pole â¦.. All I Want For Christmas Is You Itâs a little known fact that Mariah uses these lyrics in every job application she makes. OK so that might not technically be true (How many job applications do you think Ms Carey has had to complete?) but if she did sheâs certainly doing the right thing. Everyone loves a compliment and employers are no different. Employers want to know why you want to work for them, why they attracted you, what made them stand out and why they are special. Try to avoid using cliches such as âIâve always wanted to work for youâ they will have heard this 100s of times. Instead do your research, find out about the organisations values do they align with you own and if so how? Does the culture of the company attract you? You can find out more about how to do this by using our Covering Letter Guide. Last Christmas Just like being dumped not being successful at an interview can be difficult to come to terms with. However just like after a break up its important to remember that there are plenty more fish (or in this case employers) in the sea. To get over the disappointment start by reminding yourself that even getting to the interview stage was a success as to be invited the employer must have been impressed by your application . See the interview you had as a learning experience- youll now have better idea of what to expect next time. You can also learn from the employer by asking them for feedback on why you were not successful. Although it may be difficult to hear hearing where/what you need to improve on will enable you to rectify it before your next interview. Do They Know Its Christmas? Charles Dickens got it wrong. The real Scrooge isnât Ebenezer its actually graduate recruiters! There a still a number of graduate schemes yet to close before the end of December.
